You should regularly see an eye doctor, even if you don't wear glasses, because your eyes change as you age. You might not always realize that it may be time for you to get glasses until suddenly everything is blurry and you are getting headaches from trying to see what is going on. When you go see the eye doctor, there are several tests that they are going to perform to make sure that your eyes are healthy and to discover if you need to have any corrective lenses to see better.

Glaucoma Test

One of the tests that they will do is check to see if you have glaucoma. Glaucoma is caused by abnormally high fluid pressures in your eye. There are a couple of ways that the doctor will test to see if you have this disease. One of them is to use a special machine that measures the pressure in your eye. This test can be difficult for some people because the machine has to get right up against your eyeball. The test is quick, and the doctor will get the reading needed to make sure that you aren't dealing with this disease.

Pupil Dilation

Another thing that the eye doctor will do is to dilate your pupils. Dilating your pupils will allow more light to reach the backs of your eyes. It will also allow the doctor to examine all the stuff at the back of your eye, like your retina. Doing that will allow your eye doctor to check for all kinds of diseases that might attack your eye, as well as another way for them to check to see if you have glaucoma. You might want to make sure that you have someone with you who can drive you home after you have your eyes dilated. It may not be comfortable for you to drive, especially if it is very bright outside, because your eyes aren't going to be able to contract to protect themselves from all that light getting into them and your vision may be blurry for a while.

Getting your eyes checked regularly can not only make sure that your eyes are healthy, but your eye doctor can also find other health issues that you might have and let you know that you might want to see your primary care physician so that you can take care of your overall health.
